Arizona State University (ASU) has officially approved a transformative $447 million renovation project for Mountain America Stadium, home of the Sun Devils football team. This ambitious overhaul aims to modernize the historic venue, enhance fan experiences, and position ASU as a premier destination in collegiate athletics.
Originally constructed in 1958, the stadium has undergone several renovations, with the most recent five-year, $304 million project completed in August 2019. The upcoming renovation will further reduce the stadium’s capacity from approximately 71,706 to between 55,000 and 65,000 seats, prioritizing comfort with increased legroom and seat backs . The north end zone will be opened up to provide scenic views of Tempe Town Lake, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the venue .
Key upgrades include the installation of a state-of-the-art sound system, advanced video boards, and improved ADA amenities. The renovation will also feature upgraded concessions, restrooms, concourses, elevators, and escalators, ensuring a more enjoyable experience for all attendees . Additionally, the natural grass playing surface will be replaced with FieldTurf to accommodate the stadium’s new design .
To fund this extensive project, ASU has launched a $50 million fundraising campaign targeting private donations. The university is seeking six “founding partners,” each contributing $6 million, in exchange for exclusive club suites and recognition with statues outside the stadium . Other revenue sources include naming rights, stadium operations, and a new athletic-facilities district currently under development . Importantly, no taxpayer money will be used for the renovation.
ASU plans to continue hosting home football games at Mountain America Stadium throughout the construction period, avoiding relocation to alternative venues like Chase Field in Phoenix . The renovation is expected to be completed in phases, with a flexible timeline that allows for adjustments based on construction progress and scheduling needs .
This significant investment reflects ASU’s commitment to elevating its athletic programs and providing top-tier facilities for athletes and fans alike. By modernizing Mountain America Stadium, the university aims to enhance its national profile, attract top recruits, and foster a vibrant community atmosphere that extends beyond game days.
