Arizona State University has honored one of its most revered alumni, Pat Tillman, with the unveiling of a striking bronze statue at Sun Devil Stadium. This tribute commemorates Tillman’s extraordinary journey from collegiate football star to NFL player, and ultimately, to a U.S. Army Ranger who made the ultimate sacrifice.
The statue, standing six feet tall and weighing 400 pounds, is positioned at the entrance of the Tillman Tunnel, the pathway through which ASU football players enter the field. Crafted by artist Jeff Carol Davenport, the sculpture captures Tillman in full football gear, poised as if stepping onto the field. Inscribed on its base is one of Tillman’s own reflections:
“Somewhere inside, we hear a voice. It leads us in the direction of who we wish to become. But it is up to us whether or not to follow.”
The unveiling ceremony drew hundreds, including Tillman’s family, former teammates, current players, and university officials. Kevin Tillman, Pat’s brother, emphasized Pat’s dedication to personal growth over fame or wealth, stating, “He didn’t focus on money, he didn’t focus on fame, he didn’t focus on a pretty statue. It was, ‘How can I make myself a better person in all these different facets of my life?’”
Pat Tillman played linebacker for ASU from 1994 to 1997, earning accolades for both his athletic prowess and academic achievements. After being drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in 1998, he left a promising NFL career in 2002 to enlist in the U.S. Army following the September 11 attacks. Serving as an Army Ranger, Tillman was tragically killed in Afghanistan in 2004.
ASU head coach Todd Graham highlighted Tillman’s enduring influence on the team, noting that his image adorns every wall of the football complex. A new tradition has been established where players touch the statue as they enter the field, symbolizing a commitment to embodying Tillman’s values of courage, integrity, and selflessness.
This statue serves not only as a memorial to Pat Tillman’s legacy but also as a source of inspiration for future generations, reminding all of the profound impact one individual can have through dedication and sacrifice.
