Farke Must Stop His Aaronson Obsession – Leeds Have Better Options Now
Daniel Farke has built a reputation for being a thoughtful and calculated manager, but one question is increasingly being asked around Leeds United: is it time to move away from his continued reliance on Brenden Aaronson?
Aaronson has shown flashes of quality since joining Leeds, offering energy, movement and the ability to operate between the lines. However, consistency has often been the biggest concern. For a club with ambitions of competing at the highest level, relying too heavily on a player who has struggled to maintain his best level could become a tactical problem.
The situation is particularly interesting because Leeds now have more options within their squad. Competition for places should be one of the strengths of a team looking to establish itself and progress. Farke therefore has an opportunity to assess his attacking and midfield options more ruthlessly and select players based on current form rather than reputation or previous trust.
Aaronson’s strongest qualities are clear. He can press aggressively, make intelligent runs and provide movement that can disrupt defensive structures. When confident, he can be an effective link between midfield and attack. The problem comes when those qualities fail to translate into decisive contributions.
For Leeds, creativity and end product are crucial. Supporters want to see players who can turn possession into chances and chances into goals. If another player in the squad is currently offering greater creativity, physical presence, defensive contribution or goal threat, Farke should not hesitate to give that player an opportunity.
This is not necessarily an argument that Aaronson should be discarded. Rather, it is about creating genuine competition. A place in the starting XI should never be guaranteed. Players should earn selection through performances, tactical suitability and consistency.
Farke also has to consider the bigger picture. Leeds are competing in an environment where small margins can make a significant difference. Opponents will study their patterns of play, identify weaknesses and attempt to exploit them. Having different attacking options allows a manager to change the team’s approach and keep opponents guessing.
The pressure on Farke is therefore understandable. Fans are not simply questioning one player; they are questioning whether the manager is making the most effective use of the squad available to him.
If Leeds truly have better options now, the responsibility rests with Farke to be brave enough to use them. Football management is ultimately about making difficult decisions, even when those decisions involve players a manager trusts.
Aaronson still has an opportunity to prove his critics wrong. But trust must be supported by performances.
For Leeds United, the message is simple: pick the players who give the team the best chance of winning. If that means reducing Aaronson’s role, Farke must be prepared to make that call.
