ANOTHER ONE IS LEAVING — Kentucky’s Transfer Portal Exodus Continues

The Kentucky Wildcats men’s basketball program is entering a critical offseason filled with turnover, and the latest domino to fall is a 6‑foot‑11 forward who carved out a meaningful role for Kentucky in SEC play but has now officially entered the NCAA transfer portal.

Who’s Leaving: Andrija Jelavić

The player at the center of today’s news is Andrija Jelavić — a Croatian forward listed at 6‑11 — who took advantage of his size and upside to earn 18 starts for Kentucky during the 2025–26 season. He appeared in 32 games, averaging about 5.5 points and 4 rebounds per contest, including several starts in SEC play. Jelavić’s presence inside added depth to a roster that battled inconsistently throughout the season.

Despite showing flashes — scoring in double figures multiple times and contributing with rebounding and minutes — the combination of modest production and inconsistent shooting ultimately influenced his decision to explore other opportunities. His presence on the court was often more about physicality and hustle than star scoring, and now he joins a growing list of Wildcats seeking new homes via the portal.

Interestingly, sources also noted that while Jelavić has entered the portal, he left the door open to the possibility of returning to Lexington, depending on how his recruitment develops. That nuance — though uncommon — suggests he and his camp are weighing all options carefully.

The Bigger Picture: Wildcats in Flux

Jelavić’s exit comes amid a broader roster shakeup for Kentucky. The Wildcats have already seen multiple players enter the portal, including guards and frontcourt pieces, in what has become a significant offseason of departures. This surge of exits comes as head coach Mark Pope enters his second offseason in Lexington and looks to rebuild a roster capable of returning to national prominence.

Kentucky’s coaching staff is now tasked with navigating this heavy outflow while also pursuing talent in the portal itself, targeting players at multiple positions to replenish and upgrade the roster. Pope and his staff have been active in early portal communication, scheduling Zoom meetings, and courting potential additions — especially guards and versatile forwards — as they shape their 2026–27 blueprint.

What This Means for the Wildcats

  1. Rotation gaps to fill: Jelavić’s departure leaves Kentucky thinner up front, particularly at the power forward position. Even if his statistical impact wasn’t dominant, losing a 6‑11 rotation player creates a spot Kentucky will urgently need to replace.
  2. Portal strategy intensifies: The exodus isn’t isolated, and Kentucky must now not only replace lost contributors but upgrade talent if they hope to compete in the ultra‑competitive SEC and beyond.
  3. Recruiting pressure on coach Pope: As the roster churn continues, Pope will have to prove his mettle as a recruiter both in high school and the transfer market — a challenge that will define his tenure if Kentucky hopes to restore its national elite status.

Conclusion: A New Chapter Underway

The transfer portal has become one of the most consequential elements of modern college basketball, and Kentucky — a program synonymous with talent — is right in the middle of it. The departure of a 6‑11 forward like Andrija Jelavić, who earned a starting role in SEC contests, underscores just how dynamic and fluid rosters have become in the NIL and portal era.

For Wildcats fans, this news brings both uncertainty and opportunity. While losing contributors is never easy, it also opens doors for reinvention, improvement, and strategic roster building. As Mark Pope and Kentucky navigate this period, all eyes will be on their portal activity, NCAA recruiting success, and ultimately how they redefine their identity in the 2026–27 season and beyond.
