Atleti Line Up Midfield Reinforcement as Manu Koné Emerges as Prime January Target
Atlético Madrid are once again exploring the transfer market in search of midfield reinforcements, with growing concern over their continued reliance on club captain Koke Resurrección. Despite his importance to Diego Simeone’s system, the Spaniard’s advancing years have forced Los Rojiblancos to look toward the future.
Recent recruitment in midfield has delivered mixed results. Conor Gallagher, signed for a significant fee from Chelsea two summers ago, has struggled to fully adapt to Simeone’s tactical demands. Meanwhile, Johnny Cardoso, brought in during the last transfer window, has endured an injury-hit campaign that has limited his impact. Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka, who is out of contract next summer, is also believed to be on Atlético’s radar.
Now, a new name has risen to prominence. According to Radio Radio in Italy, via Diario AS, Atlético are strongly interested in AS Roma and France international midfielder Manu Koné. The 24-year-old has been a standout performer in Serie A this season, playing every minute under Gian Piero Gasperini and earning admirers across Europe, including Paris Saint-Germain.
Koné’s emergence coincides with Roma’s interest in Atlético forward Giacomo Raspadori. While Roma favour a loan deal with an obligation to buy, Atlético are holding firm on a €22 million valuation, potentially setting the stage for a complex negotiation between the two clubs.
