Liverpool’s January transfer plans appear set to remain conservative, with a move for Atlético Madrid striker Alexander Sørloth now looking highly unlikely. The Norwegian forward had initially been mentioned as a possible short-term solution after Alexander Isak suffered a serious injury that ruled him out for a key stretch of the season.
With the Reds determined to avoid panic buying, the idea of adding an experienced striker on loan was briefly explored. Sørloth’s physical presence, work rate, and proven goal record made him an attractive name on paper. However, any realistic deal has always pointed towards a permanent transfer — a scenario that does not align with Liverpool’s short-term thinking.
Atlético Madrid, for their part, have no intention of weakening their squad midway through the campaign. Diego Simeone values Sørloth as an important squad player, even if he is not always a guaranteed starter. His 24-goal haul last season underlined his reliability and ability to deliver in big moments, giving Atlético little incentive to consider a loan or cut-price sale.
Liverpool’s stance has also been shaped by positive medical updates on Isak, who is expected to return in the spring. With urgency reduced, Arne Slot is likely to trust his current options and internal solutions, making a January striker signing increasingly improbable.
