In a move that has South Beach buzzing, the Miami Heat may have found their next embodiment of “Heat Culture” — and his name is Elijah Brooks.
Signed to a two-way contract after going undrafted in the 2025 NBA Draft, Brooks has already begun turning heads at Summer League with his relentless motor, defensive tenacity, and chip-on-the-shoulder mentality that screams classic Pat Riley material. A 6-foot-5 guard out of Xavier, Brooks wasn’t on many big boards, but he’s become a breakout story that mirrors past Heat success tales like Duncan Robinson, Gabe Vincent, and even Udonis Haslem.
In four Summer League games, Brooks is averaging 16.3 points, 6 rebounds, and 2.1 steals per game — but the stat sheet only tells part of the story. His energy on both ends of the floor has become infectious. Multiple Heat coaches have reportedly called him “the most competitive guy in the gym,” with Heat assistant Chris Quinn stating, “You can’t teach what Elijah brings — it’s fire, effort, and fearless execution.”
Behind the scenes, Heat GM Adam Simon is believed to have personally scouted Brooks during his final season at Xavier, where he led the Big East in steals and was second in charges drawn. His workout in Miami reportedly included a full-court defensive drill that left three other prospects gasping — while Brooks asked for another round.
Head Coach Erik Spoelstra hasn’t committed to anything long-term, but his recent comments spoke volumes. “Some players talk about working hard. Others just do it. Brooks is one of those guys you want to go to war with,” Spoelstra said.
