SPARTANS CELEBRATE THE FOURTH: A GREEN-AND-WHITE SPIN ON RED, WHITE & BLUE
EAST LANSING, MI — Fireworks lit up the Michigan sky as the Spartan Family united in full force to celebrate Independence Day with pride, passion, and a whole lot of green! While the nation dressed in red, white, and blue, Michigan State fans across the country added their own signature color to the celebration—Spartan green—honoring not just America’s birthday, but also the enduring legacy of MSU pride and tradition.
From tailgates and barbecues on campus to alumni parades across the nation, Spartans found creative ways to blend patriotism with school spirit. The Spartan Marching Band delivered a thunderous rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” followed by the Michigan State fight song in a packed Fourth of July celebration at Spartan Stadium, where thousands gathered for fireworks and community festivities.
Coach Jonathan Smith, surrounded by players and family, gave a short, heartfelt speech about what the day meant to the Spartan program. “It’s a day to reflect on our freedoms, yes—but also on unity. Just like this country, this team is built on diversity, resilience, and heart. We honor the red, white, and blue—but we wear green with pride.”
Meanwhile, MSU’s student-athletes took part in various community service events—from serving meals to veterans to hosting flag-raising ceremonies with local schools. Spartan quarterback Katin Houser was spotted volunteering at a Lansing youth event, signing autographs and reminding kids to “dream big, stay humble, and love your country.”
The night ended with a stadium-wide fireworks show choreographed to both patriotic classics and Spartan anthems, bringing goosebumps to every attendee.
As the stars sparkled overhead, one thing was clear: freedom, unity, and Spartan pride go hand in hand.
