The property, a 1920s-era colonial house just blocks from MSU’s campus, will now be known as Izzo’s Haven—a 24-hour transitional housing and rehabilitation center offering counseling, job training, education programs, and mental health support to teens and young adults ages 16–24 who are facing homelessness or fleeing abusive situations.
According to sources close to the Izzo family, the idea was sparked after a late-night interaction last fall with a former student who had fallen on hard times. “Coach was deeply affected,” said MSU assistant coach Doug Wojcik. “He said, ‘Basketball’s great, banners are great—but what about the kids with no bed to sleep on tonight?’ That moment never left him.”
Construction began quietly in February and was entirely funded by Izzo’s own foundation, bypassing university or public funds. The renovation included a modern kitchen, dorm-style bedrooms, a community garden, and therapy rooms staffed by licensed professionals. The shelter is expected to open in late August—just before the start of the new school year.
“I’m proud of championships, but I’m prouder of this,” Izzo said during an emotional press briefing. “These kids are fighters, survivors. They deserve a place where they feel safe, believed in, and supported—just like I’ve tried to do with my players for the last 30 years.”
The move has garnered praise from figures across the sports and political spectrum. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer called Izzo’s gesture “a masterclass in humanity,” while former Spartan Draymond Green tweeted, “Coach didn’t just change lives on the court—he’s saving them off it too.”
