Netflix to Premiere “The Underdog,” A Gripping Documentary on WVU Legend Pat White
MORGANTOWN, WV – A powerful new sports documentary is about to hit the screens as Netflix officially announces the release of “The Underdog,” a compelling feature chronicling the incredible journey of West Virginia University (WVU) football legend Pat White. The film is slated to premiere later this year, offering fans and sports enthusiasts an up-close look at the life, struggles, triumphs, and enduring legacy of one of college football’s most electric quarterbacks.
Produced by Netflix Sports in collaboration with Mandalay Sports Media, “The Underdog” explores Pat White’s rise from an underrated recruit out of Daphne, Alabama, to a record-setting quarterback who redefined the WVU football program. Featuring exclusive interviews with White, former teammates, coaches—including the iconic Rich Rodriguez—and analysts, the documentary delves deep into his fearless playing style, unmatched dual-threat ability, and his leadership during one of the most successful eras in Mountaineer football history.
White, who played at WVU from 2005 to 2008, is widely considered one of the greatest dual-threat quarterbacks in NCAA history. He led the Mountaineers to four consecutive bowl victories, including a monumental win over Georgia in the 2006 Sugar Bowl and a dominating performance against Oklahoma in the 2008 Fiesta Bowl. He remains the only quarterback in college football history to win four bowl games as a starter.
More than just a highlight reel, “The Underdog” traces the emotional and cultural impact of White’s career, both at WVU and in shaping perceptions of black quarterbacks in college football. The film also follows his transition to the NFL, his challenges breaking into professional ranks, and his post-football life, which includes coaching, mentoring, and advocating for athlete development.
