Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko has candidly reflected on the challenges that marred the conclusion of the Aggies’ 2024 football season. After a promising 7–1 start, the team faltered, losing four of their final five games, including a heart-wrenching 35–31 defeat to USC in the Las Vegas Bowl, where they squandered a 24–7 lead. This late-season collapse was particularly painful, as it dashed hopes for an SEC Championship berth and a potential College Football Playoff appearance.
Elko, in his first year at the helm, emphasized the necessity for both schematic and mental growth. He acknowledged that while the team had made significant strides in building a positive culture—focusing on accountability, work ethic, and camaraderie—their on-field performance still required substantial improvement. “What we did not do was get good enough at football, and that is ultimately my responsibility,” Elko admitted. “We are fundamentally not good enough. We are just not good enough right now”.
The Aggies’ struggles were not limited to the bowl game. They suffered consecutive losses in their final three conference games, including a defeat to arch-rival Texas. These setbacks highlighted issues in execution and decision-making, such as a critical fourth-down stop by Texas that thwarted a potential game-winning drive.
Despite these challenges, Elko remains optimistic about the program’s direction. He has focused on recruiting and developing talent, bringing in a strong class that includes several four-star prospects from both Texas and California . Additionally, the return of key players like quarterback Conner Weigman, who is recovering from a season-ending foot injury, provides hope for a more potent offense.
