DeAngelo Hall Vows to Restore Glory: “I’m Returning to Redeem the Reputation of Virginia Tech Football” as Hokies’ New Head Coach Takes the Helm
Virginia Tech football is entering a new era as DeAngelo Hall, one of the program’s most iconic alumni, returns to Blacksburg—not as a player, but as the Hokies’ new head coach. Hall, a former All-American cornerback and three-time NFL Pro Bowler, has pledged to restore the program’s legacy of toughness, speed, and defensive dominance.
Hall’s journey from Deep Creek High School in Chesapeake, Virginia, to Virginia Tech was marked by exceptional athleticism. During his three seasons with the Hokies (2001–2003), he amassed 190 tackles, eight interceptions, and five punt return touchdowns, showcasing his versatility by scoring on offense, defense, and special teams. His standout performances earned him a place in the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame in 2016 and the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 2023.
Selected eighth overall in the 2004 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons, Hall enjoyed a 14-year professional career, including a decade with Washington. He recorded 43 interceptions and holds the NFL record for most fumble return yards in a career. Notably, he tied an NFL record with four interceptions in a single game against the Chicago Bears in 2010.
After retiring in 2018, Hall transitioned into coaching, serving as an assistant defensive backs coach for the Carolina Panthers . Now, as Virginia Tech’s head coach, he brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the program’s culture.
“I’m returning to redeem the reputation of Virginia Tech football,” Hall declared. “This program shaped me, and now it’s my turn to give back and lead the Hokies to new heights.”
Hall’s vision includes reviving the aggressive defensive style synonymous with “Beamer Ball,” a philosophy instilled by legendary coach Frank Beamer and defensive coordinator Bud Foster. Hall aims to blend this tradition with modern strategies to compete at the highest level.
As the Hokies prepare for the upcoming season, Hall’s leadership has already energized the fan base. His commitment to excellence and deep ties to the university position him to guide Virginia Tech back to prominence in college football.
With Hall at the helm, the Hokies are poised to embark on a new chapter, grounded in tradition and driven by a renewed pursuit of greatness.
