The No. 1 Texas Men’s Tennis team fought valiantly but came up just short in a gripping 4-3 loss to No. 5 Virginia at the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville. Despite holding match points that could have sealed the win, the Longhorns couldn’t close it out as the Cavaliers mounted a dramatic rally.
Texas struck first by securing the doubles point with dominant victories at Nos. 1 and 2. As the singles play unfolded, Virginia responded fiercely, claiming three intense three-set victories, despite Texas taking the opening set in all of them. Texas held its ground with key wins from Jonah Braswell and Pierre-Yves Bailly, but the Cavaliers dug deep, ultimately securing the comeback victory.
Standout performances came from Braswell, who cruised to a 6-0, 6-4 win, and Bailly, who added another win with a 6-2, 6-4 performance. However, the Longhorns couldn’t capitalize on their momentum, with Gorzny, Legout, and Brown falling in equally nail-biting three-set battles.
With a near-miss on the road, Texas looks ahead to its next challenge—taking on No. 2 TCU in Austin this Friday, February 2, at the Weller Indoor Tennis Center, as they look to bounce back after last season’s heartbreak in the NCAA Championship. The stakes are higher than ever for the Longhorns!
