The No. 5 Texas Longhorns rolled through College Station, delivering a commanding 70-50 victory over Texas A&M to capture the Lone Star Trophy. Head coach Vic Schaefer, back at his alma mater, brought his signature toughness to the game, leading Texas to an early and unrelenting start.
“We came out, punching it out,” said senior guard Rori Harmon. “I’m really happy about that because we’ve struggled with that intensity in recent games.”
Despite a rough patch with senior forward Aaliyah Moore sidelined due to injury, Texas came out swinging in this one. They finished the first quarter with a 22-12 lead and extended it to a massive 17-point advantage by halftime.
Texas A&M head coach Joni Taylor acknowledged the Longhorns’ all-around prowess: “Texas is deliberate on offense, they’re stingy on defense. They don’t beat themselves.”
Sophomore forward Madison Booker had a standout performance, leading the charge with 17 points, 13 rebounds, and five assists. Booker’s double-double was her fourth of the season, and she is now just 34 points shy of hitting the 1,000-point milestone.
“Booker really embraced discomfort,” Schaefer said. “She stepped up and turned out to be really good at it.”
Texas continued to shine on defense, showcasing one of the nation’s best with lockdown plays and 16 points off turnovers. They outshot the Aggies 16-4 in points from mistakes and forced 11 turnovers.
Now, Texas heads into one of its toughest stretches yet, facing four ranked teams in the next two weeks. They’ll travel to take on No. 12 Kentucky, with No. 23 Vanderbilt, No. 2 South Carolina, and No. 7 LSU all visiting the Moody Center.
As the SEC heats up, Schaefer and his Longhorns are poised to make a statement and prove they’re ready for March Madness.
