MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Arkansas head coach Sam Pittman isn’t revealing everything about redshirt freshman Maddox Lassiter, but there’s no doubt he’s a player to watch in the upcoming Liberty Bowl against Texas Tech. While Pittman teased Lassiter’s ability to catch the ball, his full skill set remains under wraps — but rest assured, there’s more to this athlete than meets the eye.
Pittman has high praise for Lassiter, calling him “talented,” “always happy,” and “always physical.” But what stands out is his impressive hands. “He can really catch the ball,” Pittman said Thursday, leaving fans wondering just what else Lassiter can do.
What makes Lassiter even more intriguing is his versatility. At Warren High School, he wasn’t just a tight end; he also played quarterback and linebacker, showcasing his all-around athleticism. His high school teammate, incoming freshman Anthony Jordan, saw firsthand how Lassiter could sling the ball with pinpoint accuracy, especially on deep passes. This multi-sport skill set has Pittman fired up about Lassiter’s future potential.
“I was bragging on him so much when Coach Bobby Petrino arrived,” Pittman recalled. “Coach Petrino started calling him ‘Your boy, your boy, your boy’ because I couldn’t stop talking about Lassiter. I think he’s got the potential to be a really great player.”
After being placed on scholarship in December, Lassiter’s contributions have only increased. Pittman has consistently praised his work ethic and the way he thrives in physical situations, hinting that Lassiter’s role could expand even further as the season progresses.
Listed as the second tight end on the Liberty Bowl depth chart, behind senior Andreas Paaske, Lassiter’s true impact remains uncertain, but Pittman is confident. “I believe he’ll do well,” Pittman added, adding more mystery to Lassiter’s upcoming performance.
