Klopp’s Germany Under Pressure After Greece Shock
Jürgen Klopp’s new era as Germany head coach has suffered another setback after Greece secured a surprising 1–0 victory in Augsburg on Sunday. Dimitris Kourbelis scored the decisive goal in the 74th minute, handing Greece their first-ever victory over Germany in 11 meetings.
Germany controlled much of the match and enjoyed significant possession, but Klopp’s side struggled to turn that control into clear goalscoring opportunities. A defensive mistake eventually allowed Greece to punish Germany, leaving the hosts without a goal on Klopp’s first home appearance as national-team coach.
The result means Klopp is still waiting for his first competitive victory after his opening two Nations League matches. Germany began the campaign with a 1–1 draw away to the Netherlands before Sunday’s defeat, leaving the team with just one point from two games. Greece, meanwhile, moved to the top of the group with six points.
The German coach had spoken before the international break about bringing a fresh approach to the national team, with the DFB announcing his first squad on September 17. The upcoming matches against Serbia and Greece will now provide further opportunities for Klopp to shape his team and search for a winning formula.
Germany’s injury situation has also complicated the transition. Jamal Musiala and Kai Havertz missed the Greece match after suffering injuries, while Florian Wirtz and Jonathan Burkardt were brought into the squad earlier than initially planned.
With the next Nations League fixtures approaching, attention will now turn to how Klopp responds. Germany face Serbia in Munich on October 1 before travelling to Greece on October 4.
