In a startling escalation of global tensions, a senior Russian political figure has publicly warned that U.S. President Donald Trump’s strategic policy promises — including a bid to acquire Greenland — could trigger a nuclear catastrophe described as “the beginning of the end of the world.” This stark rhetoric comes amid already elevated concerns about nuclear deterrence, arms control, and the long-running war in Ukraine.
The warning was issued by Russian Senator Dmitry Rogozin, a prominent Kremlin ally and former deputy prime minister. Rogozin’s remarks center on Trump’s reported intention to pursue Greenland — an idea the U.S. leader has repeatedly floated publicly — and the fear among some Russian policymakers that the U.S. would deploy strategic missile defense systems and offensive weapons from the island’s Arctic territory. According to Rogozin, such a move could fundamentally destabilize global nuclear strategic balance by giving Washington a perceived geographic advantage over Russia and China.
Why Greenland? Nuclear Strategic Geography
Greenland’s Arctic position makes it strategically significant. In Rogozin’s telling, the island could be used to host intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) launch infrastructure, missile defense systems, and space-based sensors — all of which could reportedly erode Russia’s nuclear second-strike capability, which has been a linchpin of strategic stability since the Cold War. He frames this as more than diplomatic rivalry: “This is the dismantling of the entire system of strategic stability in the world that has prevented the use of nuclear weapons since 1945.”
The Kremlin ally’s comments went further to explicitly warn that if Washington convinces itself it has nuclear superiority, then Moscow might conclude that a first nuclear strike is tactically necessary in a future confrontation — a chilling assertion that revives fears of an all-out nuclear confrontation.
NATO Response and Heightened Arctic Security
The remarks come as NATO and allied forces are reportedly increasing military presence around Greenland and the Arctic, partly in response to rising geopolitical competition with Moscow over the High North. Denmark — the sovereign power over Greenland — along with the UK, Germany, Sweden, Norway, and France, has been coordinating enhanced security operations in the region, driven in part by worries about Russian assertiveness and by Trump’s persistent focus on Greenland.
