Barcelona’s return to La Liga action has suffered an untimely setback, with key midfielder Dani Olmo set to miss the upcoming derby clash against Espanyol. Even before competitive football resumes, the Catalan giants are already being forced to adjust their plans for one of the most intense fixtures on the calendar.
According to reports from SPORT, Olmo will not recover in time for the derby, dealing a significant blow to Hansi Flick’s attacking options. While the Spanish international has made encouraging progress in his recovery, the club’s medical staff are taking a cautious approach and are unwilling to take risks with such a physically demanding fixture.
Olmo has been sidelined since December 2, when he suffered a dislocation to his left shoulder during a crucial encounter against Atlético Madrid. Although his rehabilitation has gone smoothly, Barcelona remain committed to the original recovery timeline of around one month to prevent any long-term complications.
The Espanyol derby is expected to be intense and combative, making it an unsuitable scenario to rush Olmo back into action. Instead, the 27-year-old is expected to gradually return to group training this week.
Full medical clearance, however, may only arrive closer to the Spanish Super Cup, meaning Barcelona will have to navigate their first major test of 2026 without one of their most creative midfielders.
