Union Berlin’s Diogo Leite Emerges as Surprise Barcelona Target After Defensive Injury Blow
FC Barcelona have been linked with a shock defensive target as they scramble to reinforce their back line following a serious injury setback. According to Mundo Deportivo, Union Berlin centre-back Diogo Leite has been added to the Catalan giants’ transfer shortlist ahead of the January window.
Barcelona’s search for a new defender intensified after former Borussia Mönchengladbach star Andreas Christensen suffered a cruciate ligament injury, ruling him out for a lengthy period. With limited options available and financial constraints still shaping their strategy, the reigning La Liga champions are exploring market opportunities for a quick and affordable solution.
Leite, 26, fits Barcelona’s desired profile. The Portuguese defender is under contract with Union Berlin only until next summer, making him a potentially attainable target in January. Union are reportedly willing to listen to offers of around €10 million, a figure that could appeal to Barça given the circumstances.
However, Leite is not considered Barcelona’s top priority. Other, more ambitious options such as Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck and Bayern-linked Marc Guéhi are also admired, though both would be difficult to sign mid-season.
Several experienced alternatives remain on the list, including Nicolás Otamendi, Stefan de Vrij, Marcos Senesi, Diego Llorente, and Juan Foyth. Still, Leite’s availability and price could make him a realistic and intriguing option as Barcelona weigh their next move.
