Atletico Madrid Make Surprise Enquiry for Bayern Munich Midfield General Leon Goretzka
As the January transfer window approaches, Atletico Madrid have reignited their long-standing interest in Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka. According to transfer insider Matteo Moretto, speaking via Radio Marca, the Spanish giants have made an enquiry about the German international, who will be free to negotiate a potential summer move once the window opens.
Goretzka’s future at Bayern remains uncertain. Despite being a key figure since arriving from Schalke on a free transfer in 2018, the 29-year-old has seen his role reduced over the past year. Bayern were open to parting ways with him in 2024, even leaving him out of early matchday squads, but Goretzka chose to stay and fight for his place. That decision paid off, as he went on to contribute during Vincent Kompany’s campaign that ended with Bundesliga success.
However, with Bayern not keen on offering a new contract and younger options like Aleksandar Pavlovic and Tom Bischof moving ahead in the pecking order, the club appears to be planning for life beyond Goretzka. Atletico’s interest adds a new twist, though Bayern are unlikely to approve a winter exit, valuing his experience and depth for the title run-in.
The second half of the season could prove decisive in shaping Goretzka’s next chapter.
