Kepa Set for Chelsea Showdown as Arsenal Eye League Cup Glory
Arsenal goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga is brimming with confidence ahead of a tantalising League Cup semi-final clash against his former club Chelsea, after playing a decisive role in the Gunners’ dramatic quarter-final triumph over Crystal Palace.
The Spaniard was the hero on Tuesday night at the Emirates Stadium, saving Maxence Lacroix’s penalty in a thrilling 8–7 shootout victory that followed a 1–1 draw in normal time. Kepa’s intervention ensured Arsenal progressed to the semi-finals, keeping alive their hopes of lifting the first major trophy of the season.
Having spent seven years at Chelsea before completing a move to north London in pre-season, Kepa now has the opportunity to haunt his old employers. All three of his appearances for Arsenal so far have come in the League Cup, underlining his importance in the competition.
Speaking after the win, Kepa stressed Arsenal’s determination to go all the way.
“Right now, if you want a trophy — and that’s something we want — you have to fight against good teams,” he said.
“Both semi-finals are big games. It’s going to be tough, but we’ll prepare well, be ready, and go for it.”
Arsenal will face Chelsea over two legs, with the first encounter scheduled for January 14 at Stamford Bridge, before the return leg at the Emirates on February 3. The winner will book a coveted place at Wembley.
Despite their progress, concerns remain for Mikel Arteta’s side. Marc Guéhi’s late equaliser for Palace marked the third time in Arsenal’s last five matches that they have conceded in or beyond the 90th minute — a trend they must address as the stakes continue to rise.
