Joe Cole Opens Up on Chelsea Exit: “I Never Really Wanted to Leave”
Former Chelsea star Joe Cole has revealed that his departure from the Blues was largely influenced by ego, not desire to leave the club. Speaking on The High Performance Podcast, Cole admitted that he never truly wanted to move on but felt overlooked during a period of injury.
🗣️ “Looking back now, they never contacted me [about my contract situation during my time out with injury]. Then I got back from the injury… took me 11 months and I had about eight or nine months left on my contract. But again, like that little bit of petulance in me, I was like, well, where were you when I was injured? Do you know what I mean?”
Cole admitted that pride played a role in the stalled negotiations, saying he believed he should have been offered a contract extension 18 months earlier. “There was a little bit of that going on… Never really wanted to go,” he added.
Reflecting with hindsight, the former England international acknowledged he might have accepted a lower offer to stay: “If I knew then what I know now, I’d have gone back to the table and taken maybe a cut price because I was happy, you know what I mean?”
