Bruno Fernandes Injury Deepens Manchester United Woes After Aston Villa Defeat
Villa Park — Manchester United suffered a major setback in their push for momentum in the Premier League after captain Bruno Fernandes was forced off with a suspected hamstring injury during Sunday’s 2–1 defeat to Aston Villa.
The talismanic midfielder, who has been central to United’s recent resurgence, pulled up in visible discomfort late in the first half and was unable to continue after the interval. Fernandes was replaced at halftime, with Lisandro Martínez introduced as manager Rúben Amorim reshuffled his side.
United’s afternoon had already been difficult. Aston Villa struck first just before the break through Morgan Rogers, before Matheus Cunha restored parity for the visitors. But any hopes of building on that equaliser were dented by the loss of their captain, and Villa eventually went on to secure the victory.
Fernandes appeared to be struggling with the back of his right leg as he attempted to play on before the break, signalling what Amorim later described as a “soft tissue” problem — often associated with hamstring injuries.
Speaking after the match, Amorim admitted the early signs were not encouraging.
“It’s soft tissue, so it’s going to take a while. We’ll see,” the United boss said, adding that Fernandes is expected to miss several upcoming fixtures, including the Boxing Day clash against Newcastle United.
While the club is still awaiting further medical assessment to determine the full extent of the injury, Amorim acknowledged that the midfielder is likely to be sidelined through a crucial period of the festive schedule.
The setback compounds United’s growing injury concerns, with several first-team players already unavailable due to fitness issues and international commitments. Fernandes’ absence, in particular, will be keenly felt, given his role as the side’s leading creative force and on-field leader.
For United, the defeat at Villa Park and the loss of their captain represents a double blow — one that could shape their season as the congested winter fixtures loom.
