Neil Mellor assessed a record-breaking performance by Curtis Jones in his analysis of Liverpool’s Champions League win at Eintracht Frankfurt.
The Reds chalked up a 5-1 victory in Germany on Wednesday night, coming from a goal down at Deutsche Bank Park to halt a four-game losing streak.
Hugo Ekitike, Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai were on the scoresheet for Arne Slot’s side.
Jones, meanwhile, completed 122 passes amid an influential performance in midfield – the highest number on record with Opta for a Liverpool player in a Champions League match.”It was really hard to pick a Man of the Match for the game but one of the contenders: an outstanding performance from Curtis Jones,” said Mellor during LFCTV’s Champions League Review Show.
“He always wants the ball, he had so many touches in the game.
“He had 139 touches, 127 passes and he completed 96 per cent of them. That is amazing.
“He was vital in keeping control of the middle of the pitch. He also contested nine duels, which was the most on the team. And his 18 final-third entries was also a team high. So, a really good night.
“You often find stats like that when [opposition] teams have had a player sent off; they had 11 players on the pitch.”
