Kansas State’s Offensive X-Factor: Dylan Edwards Ready to Electrify in 2025

When Kansas State Offensive Coordinator Matt Wells talks about his players, it’s usually with a mix of measured optimism and football-savvy insight. But when the topic shifts to sophomore running back Dylan Edwards, that measured tone shifts to something closer to excitement — maybe even awe.

“I see a guy that’s really dynamic, runs the ball better than you think in between the tackles, he has proven to be durable so far, and I hope that continues, but he’s dynamic with the ball in his hands,” Wells said, summing up what Wildcat fans have been buzzing about all offseason.

The Wildcats’ offense is coming into 2025 with plenty of intrigue. While the quarterback battle, the offensive line depth, and the receiving corps all have their storylines, Edwards has emerged as a clear offensive weapon that can change the pace — and possibly the outcome — of games.

More Than Just a Speedster

When Edwards first arrived at Kansas State, the scouting report centered on his elite speed and ability to turn the corner. Opposing defensive coordinators were quick to peg him as an “outside threat” — the kind of player who could torch defenses on sweeps, screen passes, and open-field space plays.

But as Wells points out, Edwards’ game has grown far beyond the perimeter. His ability to run between the tackles has caught even seasoned coaches off guard. The 5’8” back has developed a knack for slipping through small creases, exploding into the second level, and absorbing contact without losing momentum.

“He runs the ball better than you think in between the tackles,” Wells noted — and that’s not just coach-speak. Edwards’ vision has sharpened, and his footwork has improved to the point where he’s no longer just a change-of-pace back. He’s a legitimate every-down threat.

Durability Through the Grind

In the Big 12, durability is often the difference between an impact player and a highlight reel that fades after September. Edwards’ sophomore campaign will test his ability to handle the pounding that comes with a larger workload, but so far in fall camp, he’s passed every test.

“He has proven to be durable so far, and I hope that continues,” Wells said, a subtle acknowledgment of the physical toll on running backs. Kansas State will still rotate backs to keep legs fresh, but Edwards’ ability to stay on the field is a big reason why the offense can keep its full playbook open.

A Nightmare in Space

Of course, Edwards’ calling card remains his open-field explosiveness. Once the ball is in his hands and he gets daylight, it’s almost unfair for defenders. His burst forces linebackers to overcommit, and his lateral agility can leave safeties reaching for air.

This dynamic skill set gives Wells incredible flexibility in play-calling. Edwards can line up in the backfield, motion to the slot, or run routes against linebackers — all while forcing defenses to account for him on every snap. It’s the kind of versatility that doesn’t just create opportunities for Edwards, but also opens up space for Kansas State’s other weapons.

The Bigger Picture

Kansas State’s offense in 2025 isn’t just about one player, but it’s clear Edwards will be at the heart of a lot of big plays. If the offensive line can create consistent push and the passing game keeps defenses honest, Edwards could be looking at a breakout year statistically — and more importantly, could be the spark that keeps the Wildcats in Big 12 title contention.

As fall camp winds down and the season opener approaches, Wells’ comments sound less like cautious praise and more like a warning to the rest of the conference: Dylan Edwards isn’t just a fast kid in purple — he’s a complete back, a durable weapon, and the kind of dynamic playmaker that can tilt the field in Kansas State’s favor.

And if he keeps running “better than you think” between the tackles? The rest of the Big 12 might need to start rethinking their defensive game plans.
