Legend Reunites With Legacy: Larry Csonka Returns to Dolphins as Senior Advisor of Team Culture and Heritage
In a move celebrated by fans and analysts alike, former Miami Dolphins standout and NFL Comeback Player of the Year, Larry Csonka, has accepted a newly created position within the Miami Dolphins franchise. Csonka, widely regarded as one of the greatest fullbacks in NFL history and a cornerstone of the Dolphins’ iconic undefeated 1972 team, will now serve as Senior Advisor of Team Culture and Heritage — a role specifically designed to bridge generations of Dolphins greatness and infuse today’s squad with the franchise’s proud legacy.
The decision was officially announced Friday morning by Dolphins CEO Tom Garfinkel, who called Csonka’s return “a homecoming long overdue.”
“Larry Csonka doesn’t just represent Dolphins history — he is Dolphins history,” Garfinkel said. “Bringing him back into the fold is about more than nostalgia. It’s about embedding championship DNA into the heart of our current culture.”
At 78, Csonka remains as formidable in presence as he was on the field. The Hall of Fame bruiser rushed for over 1,000 yards in three different seasons and earned MVP honors in Super Bowl VIII. His bone-crushing running style and leadership were instrumental to Miami’s back-to-back championships and their mythical 17-0 season.
In his new position, Csonka will serve as a mentor to players and coaches, provide input on team traditions, and represent the Dolphins at key community events. More intriguingly, he will co-lead a newly developed initiative called “72 Forward,” a mentorship and storytelling program pairing current players with Dolphins alumni to foster legacy-driven leadership.
“I’m not here to call plays or relive the past,” Csonka said during a brief press conference. “I’m here to make sure the guys in that locker room know what it means to wear this jersey — the grit, the pride, the legacy. That ‘72 spirit isn’t dead — it’s dormant. And it’s time to wake it up.”
