EAST LANSING, MI — In a powerful act of compassion and community leadership, Michigan State men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo has personally invested $3.6 million to convert a historic East Lansing mansion into a state-of-the-art transitional shelter for homeless youth. The 10-bedroom colonial estate, previously owned by a retired auto executive, is now being reimagined as The Izzo Haven, a residential program offering housing, mental health counseling, educational support, and career training for youth aged 16–24 experiencing homelessness or aging out of foster care.
According to sources close to Izzo, the project was sparked by a heartbreaking moment in 2024, when a former walk-on MSU player revealed he had spent much of his teenage years sleeping in his car or couch-surfing. That revelation reportedly “shattered” Izzo, who vowed privately to do something tangible.
“I’ve built champions on the court,” Izzo said during an emotional press conference Tuesday, “but if we can’t build safety and dignity off the court for our kids, then what are we even doing? This is bigger than basketball.”
The project has partnered with local nonprofits, including Haven House and the Michigan Youth Opportunity Initiative, to ensure wraparound services are in place. Former players are also stepping up—Draymond Green pledged to cover the first year of food services, and Magic Johnson has offered technology and mentorship support through his foundation.
The mansion-turned-shelter will host up to 20 youth at a time and is expected to open its doors by October 2025. University President Kevin Guskiewicz called Izzo’s action “the most significant personal donation toward youth welfare in MSU history.”
