Steven Mateen Izzo, named in honor of the late Mateen Cleaves — the iconic leader of Izzo’s 2000 national championship team — has followed a unique path of his own. As a walk-on point guard for the Spartans, Steven embraced the grueling demands of college basketball while balancing the pressures of carrying the Izzo name. While he rarely logged starter minutes, he became a symbol of perseverance and unity on the bench.
