Spartan Star Jaden Akins Pledges $2 Million to Build Housing for Homeless and At-Risk Youth
East Lansing, MI – June 30, 2025 — In a move that has captured the hearts of fans and inspired an entire community, Michigan State senior guard and team captain Jaden Akins has pledged a staggering $2 million towards the development of a state-of-the-art housing facility for homeless and underprivileged youth in Lansing.
Akins, who has been a standout both on and off the court, announced the initiative during a press conference at the Breslin Center earlier today. Fighting back tears, the 6’4” guard shared his personal motivation for the gift — a journey that started far from fame and hardwood glory.
“I know what it’s like to grow up not knowing where you’ll sleep at night,” Akins said. “Basketball gave me structure, purpose, and hope. I want to build a space where kids can feel safe, supported, and dream big — even if the world tells them otherwise.”
The facility, named The Rising Home, will provide shelter, meals, counseling, academic support, and athletic mentorship to children and teens facing housing instability. In partnership with local nonprofits and Michigan State’s Department of Human Development and Family Studies, construction is expected to begin in late 2025, with the doors opening in the fall of 2026.
Head coach Tom Izzo praised his star player for “embodying everything this program stands for.”
“Jaden’s leadership has never been just about points or defense,” Izzo said. “He’s the heartbeat of this team, and now he’s proving he’s the heartbeat of this community.”
Akins, projected to be an early second-round pick in next year’s NBA Draft, says his goal isn’t just to leave a legacy on the court — but to make sure no kid is left behind in life.
“I’ve been blessed,” he said. “Now it’s time to pass it on.”
