SPARTAN STRONG: Jaden Akins Cemented His Legacy with Grit, Growth, and Game-Changing Impact at Michigan State
East Lansing, MI – June 2025
Durability, discipline, and an unshakable sense of purpose—that’s the legacy Jaden Akins leaves behind as one of Michigan State’s most complete and consistent guards of the Tom Izzo era. Over four seasons, Akins embodied what it means to be a Spartan: tough, reliable, and quietly lethal.
In 138 career games donning the green and white, Akins poured in 1,252 points, placing him 32nd all-time in MSU scoring history—a remarkable feat considering the depth of talent that has passed through East Lansing. But it wasn’t just about the points. Akins became only the 18th Spartan in history to surpass 1,000 points, 400 rebounds, and 150 assists, showcasing his all-around impact and versatility on both ends of the court.
“He’s one of those guys who doesn’t need to yell to be heard,” said Head Coach Tom Izzo. “Jaden did the dirty work, he hit big shots, and he defended the best players night after night. You win with guys like him.”
Akins’ shooting was a constant threat—he knocked down 187 career three-pointers and hit free throws at an impressive 81 percent clip. But beyond the stats was a steady presence. He recorded 64 double-figure scoring games and earned a reputation as a clutch performer, often delivering key buckets in close Big Ten battles and postseason matchups.
Defensively, Akins drew the assignment that nobody wanted—guarding the opposition’s top perimeter threat. From shutting down lottery-bound scorers to neutralizing red-hot shooters, his defensive discipline earned him the respect of teammates, coaches, and opponents alike.
His crowning moment arguably came during the 2024 NCAA Tournament, where he averaged 16.5 points and 6 rebounds over four games, leading the Spartans to an Elite Eight finish and reigniting the program’s March magic.
Now preparing for his next chapter—whether in the NBA or overseas—Akins departs Michigan State as more than just a stat-sheet stuffer. He leaves as a Spartan standard-bearer. A symbol of heart, hustle, and heroic consistency.
And in East Lansing, that means everything.
