MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — In a monumental shift that’s sending tremors across the college football landscape, Marcus Freeman, the former head coach of Notre Dame, has officially been named the new head coach of the West Virginia Mountaineers. The announcement, made early Tuesday morning by WVU President Dr. Gordon Gee and Athletic Director Wren Baker, has energized Mountaineer Nation and signaled the start of a bold new chapter in Morgantown.
Freeman, who led Notre Dame to a 29–10 record during his tenure, is considered one of the brightest defensive minds in the country. Known for his passionate leadership, player-first culture, and recruiting prowess, Freeman brings not only experience but a winning mentality to a WVU program hungry for national relevance.

Freeman, 39, reportedly turned down interest from multiple Power Five programs and even fielded preliminary NFL inquiries before committing to WVU. In his introductory press conference, Freeman spoke directly to the fans: “I’ve coached in some of the most iconic venues in college football, but nothing compares to the passion and pride of Mountaineer Nation. I’m here to win, and I’m here to stay.”
Freeman is expected to bring several former Notre Dame staff members with him, including offensive coordinator Gerad Parker and strength coach Matt Balis. Recruiting insiders also believe that several high-profile recruits are reconsidering their commitments in light of Freeman’s move.
