LINCOLN, NE – Netflix Releases Heartfelt Documentary “The Under-Voice” Celebrating Greg Sharpe, the Voice of Husker Radio

Netflix has officially announced the premiere of its newest sports documentary, “The Under-Voice,” a deeply moving tribute to longtime University of Nebraska-Lincoln sportscaster and beloved voice of Husker athletics, Greg Sharpe. The film, set to debut globally next month, is already drawing critical acclaim for its emotional depth, rich storytelling, and its celebration of the man behind the microphone who became the heart and soul of Nebraska sports.

Greg Sharpe, whose unmistakable voice has become a Saturday soundtrack for Husker fans over the past two decades, is the subject of this feature-length documentary that blends behind-the-scenes footage, player testimonials, archival calls, and emotional tributes. The documentary aims to do more than just chronicle a career — it captures the spirit of a community that found its identity in the sound of one man’s voice.

From Humble Beginnings to Cornhusker Royalty

“The Under-Voice” opens with Sharpe’s humble beginnings in Missouri, where he began his broadcasting journey in high school gymnasiums and small-town radio stations. Interviews with childhood friends and early mentors reveal a young man driven by passion, integrity, and a deep love for storytelling. “He didn’t just call the games,” recalls one early colleague, “he made you feel them.”

The film highlights Sharpe’s breakthrough moment when he was hired by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2008, stepping into the massive shoes left behind by legendary broadcaster Kent Pavelka. What followed was not just a successful transition but a transformation. Sharpe didn’t try to replace anyone—he built his own legacy, one call at a time.

A Voice That Became a Tradition

Known for his poetic cadence, impeccable timing, and emotional delivery, Sharpe’s play-by-play has punctuated some of the most iconic moments in modern Husker history. From football walk-off wins to baseball upsets in Omaha, his voice has become a part of Nebraska lore.

“The documentary gave us chills,” said former Husker quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr., who is featured in the film. “Greg didn’t just narrate our highlights—he helped make them unforgettable.”

The documentary dedicates time to the often unseen work of preparation and passion that Sharpe poured into each broadcast. Archival footage shows him poring over notes, learning rosters by heart, and walking the stadium in silence before games—seeking inspiration and focus. His commitment to capturing the soul of the moment is described by coaches and players as “legendary.”

Community Icon and Humble Servant

What makes “The Under-Voice” resonate far beyond Nebraska’s borders is its portrayal of Sharpe’s impact off the air. The film explores his mentorship of young broadcasters, his philanthropic work with children’s hospitals across the state, and his role in launching Husker Radio’s annual “Voices for Hope” campaign—raising millions in support of mental health awareness.

“He made us believe our stories mattered,” said Rachel Werner, a former UNL broadcasting student. “In a world that moves fast and forgets even faster, Greg Sharpe remembered everyone.”

Premiere and Legacy

“The Under-Voice” is set to premiere at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center in Lincoln on July 15, with a red carpet event featuring several Husker legends, former coaches, and national sportscasting icons. Netflix has confirmed that the film will be released worldwide on July 19, with plans to submit the documentary for Emmy consideration in the Outstanding Sports Documentary category.

In a statement to the media, Greg Sharpe humbly reflected on the project:

“I never set out to be in a documentary. I just wanted to tell stories—especially Nebraska’s stories. If this film helps people feel the pride, the grit, and the unity that defines the Huskers, then that’s more than I could ever ask for.”

As the final scenes of the film fade to black, the sound of Sharpe’s most memorable call—“Touchdown Nebraska!”—echoes, not just through the speakers, but deep within the hearts of every Husker fan who ever turned up the radio and dreamed big.

Netflix’s “The Under-Voice” is more than a sports documentary. It’s a celebration of voice, community, and the lasting impact of a man who spoke for so many, so powerfully, for so long.

Phase II added new glass-and-brick archways and dramatically expanded sightlines toward downtown Lincoln, creating what project architect Marcos Iverson calls “a cathedral porch for college football.” Osborne’s statue now presides over that porch, ringed by native bluestem grass and granite pavers engraved with each of his conference championships. At night LED up-lighting bathes the bronze in warm amber, framing the coach against a crimson-lit “NEBRASKA” façade—a photographer’s dream that already dominates social media.
