Blacksburg, VA — For the first time in program history, the Virginia Tech Hokies softball team has claimed the No. 1 spot in the national rankings, capping off an extraordinary climb that has captured the imagination of college sports fans across the country.
Following a statement win over previously top-ranked Oklahoma, the Hokies now sit atop the NCAA Division I Softball Coaches Poll. The victory was not only symbolic—it was dominant. Behind a complete-game shutout by junior ace Taylor McKenzie and a three-run homer by slugger Lily Compton, Virginia Tech stunned the defending champions 4-0 in front of a sold-out home crowd at Tech Softball Park.
The Hokies are now 38-3 on the season, with signature wins over perennial powerhouses like UCLA, Florida, and LSU. Their only losses came early in the year, and since then, they’ve rattled off 22 straight victories—many by wide margins—thanks to an elite pitching rotation, airtight defense, and a lineup that ranks top-5 nationally in runs scored.
