LOCKDOWN LEGACY: 2026 SAFETY CHANCE COLLINS SHOCKS RECRUITING WORLD, CHOOSES TEXAS A&M OVER TEXAS TECH, UTAH & WEST VIRGINIA

In a decision that’s already igniting message boards, flipping fanbases on their heads, and fueling whispers of NIL intrigue, 2026 4-star safety Chance Collins out of DeSoto, Texas has made his decision — and it’s a polarizing one. The hard-hitting, instinctive defensive back stunned the recruiting world this week by committing to Texas A&M, snubbing fellow finalists Texas Tech, Utah, and West Virginia.

For months, insiders pointed to Texas Tech as the frontrunner. Collins had reportedly built a strong relationship with Tech’s defensive staff, especially secondary coach J.J. McCleskey. Red Raider fans believed he was a lock. Utah, meanwhile, was the “culture pick” — a program respected nationally for its development and defensive toughness. West Virginia quietly surged late with a compelling depth chart and strong NIL whispers.

But in the end, Collins, whose nickname “Lockdown Legacy” comes from a viral spring highlight reel, pulled the maroon hat. Now, everyone’s asking the same question: Why Texas A&M?

Let’s not dance around it — NIL money is the elephant in the room. Texas A&M has been long rumored to be one of the most aggressive schools in the NIL era. Their 2022 class was historic — and controversial — with fans and critics alike citing the Aggies’ deep-pocketed collectives as a driving force. Is history repeating itself?

One prominent Big 12 assistant told a regional outlet under condition of anonymity: “If you think Chance picked A&M strictly for scheme or coaching, you’re dreaming. The numbers being floated are wild. This is big-league recruiting now.”

But it’s not just about money. Collins’ decision might also be a vote of confidence in Mike Elko, A&M’s head coach who has quietly transformed the Aggie defense back into a fearsome SEC unit. Elko is no stranger to developing NFL-ready talent in the secondary, and insiders say Collins was swayed after a powerful sit-down with Elko where NFL comparisons and pro-development blueprints were laid out clearly.

Still, fans aren’t buying the company line.

Texas Tech fans are furious — many calling this “another NIL heist” and questioning whether recruiting in-state talent even matters anymore in the Lone Star State. Collins had visited Lubbock five times in the past year and posted cryptic “Red Raider blood” captions as recently as March.

“This is just like Jacoby Matthews all over again,” one Tech fan posted on X (formerly Twitter). “It’s not about football anymore. It’s an auction.”

Utah fans, too, are stunned. The Utes reportedly pitched Collins on a major early playing-time role and had him trending after a strong official visit in Salt Lake City. And West Virginia? They were the dark horse that almost pulled it off — until, according to one source, “A&M backed up the Brinks truck.”

But let’s not pretend Collins isn’t the real deal. At 6’1″, 195 lbs, with elite sideline range and a nose for the football, he’s a throwback safety with modern speed. He runs a verified 4.48, and he hits like a freight train. His junior tape is full of bone-rattling tackles and centerfield interceptions that left quarterbacks regretting their decisions.

Now he’s headed to the SEC.

What does this mean long-term? It’s another blow to the traditional powers outside the SEC who continue to lose elite talent due to NIL gaps. And it’s more ammo for critics of the current recruiting landscape, who say the soul of the game is being lost to bidding wars and unchecked booster influence.

But for Texas A&M, this is a statement. They’re not just playing the NIL game — they’re winning it. And with Chance Collins now on board, they just landed the kind of player who can set the tone for a secondary, a locker room, and maybe — just maybe — a championship run.

Whether fans love it or hate it, one thing’s certain: Lockdown Legacy is headed to College Station, and the SEC just got even scarier.
