TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — A familiar face is returning to the hallowed grounds of Bryant-Denny Stadium. Mark Ingram II, the University of Alabama’s first Heisman Trophy winner and one of the foundational players of Nick Saban’s modern dynasty, has officially joined the Crimson Tide football coaching staff.
Ingram, who etched his name into Alabama lore with his dominant 2009 season that culminated in the program’s first Heisman Trophy, will now serve as an offensive analyst under new head coach Kalen DeBoer. His hiring marks a homecoming for the former All-American running back, and a full-circle moment for a player whose impact on the program helped elevate Alabama back to national prominence.
During his college career from 2008 to 2010, Ingram rushed for 3,261 yards and 42 total touchdowns. His 2009 campaign—1,658 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns—powered the Crimson Tide to a 14-0 record and their first national title under Saban. His hard-nosed running style, leadership, and relentless work ethic became a blueprint for the program’s future stars.
After his time at Alabama, Ingram enjoyed a successful NFL career, primarily with the New Orleans Saints, where he became the franchise’s all-time leading rusher. He later spent time with the Baltimore Ravens and Houston Texans, bringing a veteran presence and continuing to showcase his durability and leadership.
Ingram’s return comes at a transitional moment for Alabama football. Following Nick Saban’s retirement, DeBoer has taken over the reins with a focus on blending new-age offense with traditional toughness. Ingram’s presence on staff is expected to bridge the gap between past and present, offering players a tangible link to the program’s championship roots.
