The heart of Tennessee basketball is beating a little louder today. In a move that has energized fans across the Volunteer State, legendary Lady Vols star Tamika Catchings is returning to the program — this time in a powerful off-the-court role. Catchings has officially joined the Tennessee Women’s Basketball staff as a Special Assistant, marking a triumphant homecoming for one of the program’s most iconic figures.
A Hall of Famer, Olympic gold medalist, WNBA champion, and beloved Lady Vol, Catchings brings with her a legacy of excellence, leadership, and an unshakable passion for the game. Her return to Rocky Top is more than symbolic — it signals a bold new chapter for the Lady Vols, one that blends tradition with a renewed sense of purpose and drive.
Catchings starred at Tennessee from 1997 to 2001 under the legendary Pat Summitt, helping the Lady Vols win a national championship and setting a standard of excellence that future generations would strive to emulate. Known for her work ethic, defensive tenacity, and contagious energy, she went on to have a stellar professional career with the Indiana Fever and became one of the most respected figures in women’s sports.
Now, she’s bringing that same energy back to Knoxville — not as a player, but as a mentor, leader, and inspiration for the current generation of Lady Vols. In her new role, Catchings will provide support to the coaching staff, mentor student-athletes, and help enhance the culture and vision of the program.
“This is more than a job — this is home,” Catchings said. “Tennessee shaped me into the woman I am today. I’m honored to give back to the program that gave me so much, and I’m excited to help this team reach new heights.”
Lady Vols head coach Kellie Harper called the addition of Catchings a “game-changer,” praising her leadership and the impact her presence will have on players, staff, and fans alike.
With Catchings back in the fold, Tennessee Women’s Basketball isn’t just honoring its rich history — it’s embracing the future with purpose and power. The message is clear: Rocky Top is rising, and with Tamika Catchings back where she belongs, the sky’s the limit.
