In a stunning display of grit and talent, the Nebraska Cornhuskers softball team upset the No. 6 Tennessee Volunteers 7–1 in their season opener at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Clearwater, Florida. This victory not only marked a triumphant return for Nebraska’s ace, Jordy Bahl, but also set the tone for a promising season ahead.
Bahl, a Nebraska native and transfer from Oklahoma, showcased her dual-threat capabilities by pitching a complete game, allowing just one run on five hits, striking out seven, and issuing no walks. Offensively, she contributed a pivotal two-run homer in the fifth inning, her first career home run, which extended Nebraska’s lead to 5–1.
The game remained tight through four innings, with Tennessee holding a 1–0 lead. However, Nebraska’s offense exploded in the fifth inning, capitalizing on Tennessee’s defensive miscues. Samantha Bland ignited the rally with an infield single, and subsequent errors allowed multiple runs to score. Bahl’s two-run homer capped the five-run inning. Bland continued her offensive prowess with a double in the seventh, finishing the game 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Defensively, Nebraska was solid, turning a crucial double play in the seventh inning to quash any hopes of a Tennessee comeback. This win was Nebraska’s first over a top-10 opponent since 2018 and improved their all-time record against Tennessee to 2–5.
Bahl’s performance drew comparisons to MLB’s Shohei Ohtani, highlighting her exceptional two-way abilities. She ranks in the top ten nationally in batting average (.475), home runs (23), ERA (1.50), and wins (26), making her the only player in the country to achieve such a feat. Her efforts have earned her Big Ten Player and Pitcher of the Year honors and a finalist spot for USA Softball’s National Player of the Year award.
