In a heartfelt tribute to one of its most distinguished alumni, Arizona State University (ASU) unveiled a life-size bronze statue of Pat Tillman at Sun Devil Stadium. The ceremony, held on August 30, 2017, commemorated Tillman’s legacy as both a formidable football player and a courageous Army Ranger who sacrificed his life for his country.
Standing 7½ feet tall, the statue depicts Tillman in his ASU uniform, poised as if ready to sprint onto the field. It is strategically placed in front of the newly constructed Tillman Tunnel, which leads players onto the north end of Frank Kush Field. This tunnel, named in his honor, serves as a daily reminder of Tillman’s dedication and spirit.
Tillman’s journey began at ASU, where he played football from 1994 to 1997. His exceptional performance on the field earned him a spot with the Arizona Cardinals in the NFL. However, in the wake of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Tillman made the profound decision to leave his professional football career and enlist in the U.S. Army. He served as an Army Ranger and tragically lost his life in Afghanistan in 2004.
The unveiling ceremony was attended by several hundred individuals, including Tillman’s family, former and current ASU players, and university officials. His brother, Kevin Tillman, spoke poignantly about Pat’s character, emphasizing that Pat’s focus was always on personal growth and integrity rather than fame or material success.
Incorporating Tillman’s legacy into the fabric of ASU football, current head coach Todd Graham ensured that images of Tillman adorned the walls of the redesigned football complex. Players now have the tradition of touching the statue before taking the field, symbolizing their commitment to embodying the values Tillman exemplified.
