For MSU: deficit becomes opportunity—fresh faces get chances, veterans step up, and the path forward remains competitive. For Izzo: once again proving why he’s one of college basketball’s elite coaches—resilience in the face of adversity, and unwavering team-first mentality.
  • Draymond Green’s love for Michigan State runs deeper than accolades and banners. A native of Saginaw, Michigan, Green joined the Spartans in 2008 and played under legendary head coach Tom Izzo. Cody Zeller Returns to Indiana as Assistant Coach Under Darian DeVries

BLOOMINGTON, IN – In a move that has Hoosier fans buzzing with excitement and nostalgia, Indiana Hoosiers men’s basketball head coach Darian DeVries has announced that former IU star Cody Zeller will join the coaching staff as an assistant coach. The announcement marks a significant homecoming for Zeller, who made his mark on the program as a standout player and remains one of the most beloved figures in Indiana basketball history.

Zeller, the 2011 Indiana Mr. Basketball and a McDonald’s All-American, played two seasons for the Hoosiers from 2011 to 2013. During his time in Bloomington, he helped revive the program, leading IU to the Sweet 16 in 2012 and playing a pivotal role in their run to a No. 1 seed in the 2013 NCAA Tournament. Known for his athleticism, basketball IQ, and humility, Zeller became a fan favorite and was instrumental in some of the most memorable wins of the Tom Crean era, including the unforgettable upset over No. 1 Kentucky in 2011.

After being selected fourth overall in the 2013 NBA Draft by the Charlotte Bobcats (now Hornets), Zeller enjoyed a solid professional career spanning over a decade, including stints with multiple NBA teams. Now, he brings that wealth of experience back to Bloomington, this time from the sidelines.

“It’s really special to welcome Cody Zeller back to Bloomington as a member of our coaching staff,” Coach DeVries said in a statement. “He has been involved in some of the biggest wins in program history, and he will be a great presence in our locker room and on the court as a mentor to our players.”

Zeller’s return not only brings a familiar face to the IU bench but also injects the program with a deep understanding of what it means to wear the cream and crimson. His experience as both a collegiate and professional player is expected to have a significant impact on player development and recruiting.

For Indiana fans, this is more than just a coaching hire — it’s a symbolic reconnection to the program’s proud tradition. With Zeller now on staff and DeVries at the helm, the future looks bright in Bloomington.
