The Indiana Hoosiers men’s basketball program is undergoing a significant transformation following a disappointing 2024–25 season, marked by the departure of key players and a change in leadership.
Leading scorer Malik Reneau has transferred to the University of Miami, returning to his home state after averaging 13.3 points and 5.5 rebounds per game for Indiana. His decision followed the hiring of new head coach Darian DeVries, who replaced Mike Woodson after a second consecutive season without an NCAA Tournament appearance.
The roster turnover didn’t stop there. Freshman Bryson Tucker, a former McDonald’s All-American, entered the transfer portal after a season of limited playing time and unexplained absences. Additionally, Luke Goode announced his intention to explore professional opportunities, including overseas leagues and the NBA G League, leaving Coach DeVries with a significant rebuilding task.
These departures come amid broader challenges for the program. Despite significant investments in Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals, including a reported $7 million war chest, Indiana struggled to retain top talent. Oumar Ballo, a high-profile transfer, publicly criticized the toxic behavior of some fans, citing death threats and hostile interactions on social media.
Coach DeVries faces the daunting task of rebuilding the roster and restoring the program’s reputation. Early efforts include securing transfers like Conor Enright from DePaul and Tucker DeVries, the coach’s son, to bring experience and stability to the team.
As the Hoosiers look to the future, the program’s ability to adapt to the evolving college basketball landscape and foster a positive environment will be crucial in attracting and retaining talent.
