Cody Zeller Returns to Indiana University as Assistant Coach
Indiana University basketball is welcoming back one of its most celebrated alumni, Cody Zeller, as an assistant coach under newly appointed head coach Darian DeVries. Zeller, a former Hoosier standout and 2011 Indiana Mr. Basketball, brings a wealth of experience from his collegiate and professional basketball career to the coaching staff.
Zeller’s return to Bloomington marks a significant moment for the Hoosiers. During his two seasons at Indiana (2011–2013), he played a pivotal role in revitalizing the program. The team improved from a 12–20 record prior to his arrival to 27–9 and 29–7 in his freshman and sophomore years, respectively. Zeller’s contributions helped lead Indiana to two Sweet 16 appearances and a Big Ten title. He was recognized as the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and earned All-American honors during his tenure.
Following his collegiate success, Zeller was selected fourth overall in the 2013 NBA Draft by the Charlotte Bobcats. Over his NBA career, he played for teams including the Charlotte Hornets, Portland Trail Blazers, Miami Heat, and New Orleans Pelicans, averaging 8.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. His professional experience is expected to be invaluable in mentoring current players and contributing to the team’s development.
Head coach Darian DeVries, who was appointed in March 2025, expressed enthusiasm about Zeller’s addition to the coaching staff. DeVries, known for his successful stints at Drake and West Virginia, aims to rebuild Indiana’s basketball program into a national contender. He believes that Zeller’s deep understanding of the game and his connection to Indiana basketball will be instrumental in achieving this goal.
Zeller’s commitment to Indiana University extends beyond the court. In 2018, he and fellow alumnus Victor Oladipo made significant contributions to the basketball program, leading to the establishment of the Oladipo Zeller Legacy Lounge in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. This gesture underscores Zeller’s enduring dedication to the Hoosiers and his desire to give back to the institution that shaped his career.
As Indiana University looks to the future, the return of Cody Zeller symbolizes a bridge between the program’s storied past and its aspirations ahead. His presence on the coaching staff not only brings a wealth of experience but also reinforces the culture and values that have long defined Hoosier basketball.
