EAST LANSING, MI – In a powerful and heartwarming move that’s already being hailed as one of the most generous acts by a major college coach, legendary Michigan State men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo has reportedly invested a staggering $5.6 million to convert a private estate into a state-of-the-art shelter for homeless youth in Michigan.
The shelter, which will be named Izzo Haven, is set to be located just outside of Lansing and will provide housing, food, mental health support, educational assistance, and job readiness training for youth aged 12 to 21. According to sources close to Izzo, the idea was born after he learned about a rising wave of youth homelessness in Michigan, particularly in underserved urban and rural areas.
“This is about more than basketball,” Izzo said during a press conference announcing the project. “It’s about giving kids who’ve been forgotten a chance to believe in themselves again. These are future leaders, thinkers, and doers — and they just need someone to believe in them.”
Izzo, who has coached at Michigan State since 1995 and is considered one of the greatest minds in college basketball history, has long been active in community initiatives. However, this latest venture marks the largest personal financial commitment he’s made to a single cause.
The shelter will feature 20 private living quarters, a full-time staff of counselors and educators, a recreational facility, and a study center outfitted with the latest technology. Plans also include community partnerships with local high schools, Lansing-area employers, and Michigan State University’s social work and education departments to ensure residents receive wraparound support.
“This isn’t a one-time handout,” Izzo emphasized. “It’s a long-term investment in real change.”
Construction is set to begin this summer, with the shelter expected to open its doors by spring 2026.
