Virginia Tech Head Coach Brent Pry Files $400 Million Lawsuit Against NCAA and University
In a stunning legal development, former Virginia Tech head football coach Brent Pry has initiated a $400 million lawsuit against the NCAA and the university, alleging a coordinated conspiracy to undermine his career and tarnish his reputation. The lawsuit, filed in federal court, accuses both parties of collusion to orchestrate his ousting and to avoid fulfilling his contractual obligations.
Pry, who served as the Hokies’ head coach from 2022 until his resignation in January 2025 following a 31–17 loss to Minnesota, claims that the NCAA’s investigation into alleged violations was manipulated to ensure his termination. He alleges that the university had a vested interest in the predetermined outcome of the investigation and that the NCAA effectively established a “tribunal” to accomplish three things: Pry taking the blame, the university being commended, and the university having cover to avoid paying Pry’s buyout.
The lawsuit further contends that the investigation was intentionally limited to avoid examining historical misconduct at Virginia Tech, which long preceded Pry’s tenure and was hidden from him. It accuses the NCAA and unnamed university officials of negligence, wantonness, tortious interference with existing and prospective business relationships, conspiracy, and bad faith.
Pry’s tenure at Virginia Tech was marked by efforts to revitalize the program, including significant staff changes and a renewed focus on recruiting. However, the Hokies struggled to achieve consistent success on the field, leading to growing scrutiny and ultimately his departure.
The university has yet to comment on the lawsuit, and the NCAA has not issued a public statement regarding the allegations. This legal action adds to the ongoing challenges facing both the Hokies’ football program and the broader landscape of college athletics.
As the case progresses, it is expected to draw attention to the intersection of university governance, NCAA oversight, and the rights of coaches within the collegiate sports system.
