Home Sweet Home: Michael Vick Returns to Virginia Tech as Director of Quarterback Development

In a move that has electrified the Virginia Tech community, legendary quarterback Michael Vick has returned to his alma mater as the Director of Quarterback Development. This appointment marks a significant homecoming for Vick, who rose to national prominence during his tenure with the Hokies from 1999 to 2000. During that period, he led the team to a Sugar Bowl appearance and finished third in Heisman Trophy voting, solidifying his status as one of college football’s most dynamic players.

After being selected first overall in the 2001 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons, Vick enjoyed a 13-season career in the NFL, earning four Pro Bowl selections and setting records as a dual-threat quarterback. His journey was not without challenges; in 2007, he faced legal issues that led to a 21-month prison sentence. Since then, Vick has worked diligently to rebuild his image, engaging in coaching roles and philanthropic efforts. Notably, he served as an offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Legends and as a coaching intern with the Kansas City Chiefs, where he mentored quarterback Patrick Mahomes during his rookie season.

In his new role at Virginia Tech, Vick will collaborate closely with the coaching staff to develop and refine the skills of the team’s quarterbacks. His extensive experience and unique insights are expected to be invaluable assets in shaping the next generation of Hokie signal-callers. Head coach Brent Pry expressed enthusiasm about Vick’s return, stating, “His passion for the program, combined with his unparalleled expertise, makes him the perfect fit for this role. Our quarterbacks will benefit greatly from his guidance”.

Beyond on-field development, Vick’s presence is anticipated to enhance Virginia Tech’s recruiting efforts, attracting top quarterback prospects eager to learn from one of the game’s most electrifying players. His return also symbolizes a full-circle moment, allowing him to give back to the institution that played a pivotal role in his early career. Reflecting on this opportunity, Vick remarked, “I’m grateful for the opportunity to return to my alma mater and give back to the program that helped shape me. I’m excited to work with the talented young quarterbacks on our roster and contribute to the success of Virginia Tech football”.

As Michael Vick embarks on this new chapter, the Virginia Tech community welcomes him back with open arms, eager to witness the impact he will have on the program’s future.
