Archie Griffin Named Greatest College Football Player of All Time by ESPN

In a monumental recognition of collegiate excellence, ESPN has officially crowned Ohio State legend Archie Griffin as the Greatest of All Time (GOAT) in college football. The announcement comes after an exhaustive evaluation of college football’s most iconic figures, including Herschel Walker of Georgia, Tim Tebow of the Florida Gators, and Texas powerhouse Earl Campbell.

Griffin, the only two-time Heisman Trophy winner in history (1974 and 1975), redefined consistency and leadership during his tenure at Ohio State. Playing under legendary coach Woody Hayes from 1972 to 1975, Griffin rushed for a then-record 5,589 career yards and started in four consecutive Rose Bowls—an unprecedented achievement.

ESPN analysts praised Griffin not just for his statistics, but for his lasting influence on the sport. “Archie Griffin embodied everything college football is meant to be—humility, toughness, and an unmatched work ethic,” said one analyst. “His legacy goes beyond numbers; he set a standard.”

Griffin edged out fierce competition for the title. Herschel Walker, who led Georgia to a national title in 1980, was a physical phenomenon. Tim Tebow, a two-time national champion and Heisman winner, remains one of the sport’s most charismatic leaders. Earl Campbell, known as “The Tyler Rose,” bulldozed through defenses and captured the Heisman in 1977.

Yet, it was Griffin’s sustained excellence, clean image, and impact on generations of players that put him over the top. Even decades after his playing days, he remains a symbol of greatness at Ohio State and across college football.

As debates rage on, ESPN’s declaration cements Archie Griffin’s place at the pinnacle of college football history—a legacy carved not just in records, but in the heart of the game.
