Tennessee Blanks Virginia, Returns to Elite Eight
The No. 10-seeded Tennessee Volunteers delivered a commanding 4-0 victory over No. 7 Virginia on Friday, punching their ticket to the NCAA Elite Eight for the second consecutive year. In a matchup between two powerhouse programs, the Vols left no room for doubt, dominating from start to finish at the national indoor tennis championships.
Tennessee set the tone early by clinching the doubles point with strong performances at the top two positions. Johannus Monday and Angel Diaz secured a 6-4 win on Court 1, while Shunsuke Mitsui and Blaise Bicknell followed with a 6-3 victory on Court 2, giving the Vols the early 1-0 edge.
In singles, the momentum never slowed. No. 4-ranked Monday continued his standout season with a swift 6-2, 6-3 win over Virginia’s top player. Mitsui followed suit with a 6-4, 6-1 decision, and Bicknell sealed the deal, taking his match 6-3, 6-4 to clinch the 4-0 sweep.
Tennessee’s relentless energy and sharp execution overwhelmed the Cavaliers, who were aiming to return to championship form. Instead, they found themselves outmatched in nearly every category.
With the win, the Volunteers improve to 24-7 on the season and move into the NCAA quarterfinals, where they’ll look to continue their deep postseason run. Head coach Chris Woodruff praised his team’s focus and resilience, noting that the win was a result of “trusting the process and playing for each other.”
As Tennessee eyes its first national title since 1980, the Volunteers have made it clear—they’re peaking at the right time. The road only gets tougher from here, but this squad looks more than ready.
