The Michigan State basketball program faced a huge shake-up when junior guard Tre Holloman entered the transfer portal last week, making him the first of three Spartans to leave that day. While sophomore Xavier Booker has already committed to UCLA, Holloman’s future remains wide open, along with that of redshirt freshman Gehrig Normand.
But Holloman is quickly zeroing in on his next destination. According to On3’s Pete Nakos, Holloman has scheduled visits with some of the biggest programs in college basketball: North Carolina, NC State, Villanova, and Baylor. Among these, North Carolina is seen by many as the current frontrunner.
Holloman, who played three seasons at Michigan State, is coming off a breakout year where he started 19 games and appeared in all 37 contests. He averaged 9.1 points per game and 3.7 assists, showing his value as both a scorer and a playmaker. His standout performance came during a thrilling overtime victory over North Carolina in the Maui Invitational, where he dropped 19 points, recorded seven assists, and grabbed three steals—cementing his place in Spartans lore.
Holloman will forever be remembered by MSU fans for his dramatic half-court buzzer-beater to defeat Maryland on the road and his fierce defense of his senior teammates during a showdown with Michigan’s freshmen on Senior Day.
But Holloman’s journey has had its challenges. His final game as a Spartan was a gut-wrenching loss to Auburn in the Elite Eight, where he struggled to find his shot, finishing with just 2 points on 0-10 shooting. The loss weighed heavily on him, and he expressed his disappointment, saying, “I wish I could have showed up big for my team today. I just feel like I left my team down.”
Despite the tough finish, Holloman’s incredible college career has shown flashes of greatness, and he’s already proven himself to be a star. From being named Minnesota’s Gatorade Player of the Year in 2022 to earning four-star status as a prospect, Holloman’s potential is sky-high.
