MSU Tight End Commit Joey Caudill Making Waves on the Basketball Court
Michigan State’s 2026 recruiting class is shaping up to be an intriguing one. So far, the Spartans have secured commitments from an in-state quarterback and offensive lineman, along with two tight ends—one from Ohio and another from North Dakota.
One of those tight ends, Joey Caudill, hails from Lexington High School in Ohio, just south of Mansfield. A three-star recruit, Caudill was the first player to commit to MSU’s 2026 class under head coach Jonathan Smith.
While football is his primary sport, Caudill’s athleticism extends beyond the gridiron. As a multi-sport athlete, his experience on the basketball court enhances his football skills, particularly in areas like stamina, body control, and overall competitiveness—qualities that coaches value highly.
Caudill’s impressive basketball season did not go unnoticed. He averaged 13.1 points, 8.4 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 1.4 steals per game, playing a crucial role in leading Lexington to its third consecutive conference title. His strong performance earned him several accolades, including an All-Mansfield News Journal selection and an All-Ohio Special Mention. Additionally, he was recognized as a second-team selection for the Northwest District and District 6 and secured a first-team spot in the Ohio Cardinal Conference.
Interestingly, Caudill currently plays quarterback for Lexington, a position switch that is not uncommon among future tight ends. Many NFL tight ends, including Travis Kelce, started as quarterbacks before transitioning to their current roles.
Recruiting analyst Allen Trieu of 247Sports praised Caudill’s athletic ability and adaptability, noting that his speed, physicality, and leadership as a quarterback should allow for a smooth transition to tight end at the college level.
Michigan State tight ends coach Brian Wozniak is undoubtedly excited about the potential Caudill brings. Wozniak has played a key role in developing tight ends like current Spartan standout Jack Velling, as well as NFL players Luke Musgrave and Teagan Quitoriano. With Caudill’s skill set, the future looks bright for the versatile athlete as he prepares to join the Spartans.
