Named after the Hall of Famer Jerry West, the award has become a symbol of excellence for college basketball’s elite shooting guards, and Johnson’s performance this season has certainly earned him a spot among the best. The Garland, Texas, native leads the Longhorns with 32.6 minutes per game, ranks second in assists, and is third in steals — but it’s his scoring that truly sets him apart.
Averaging an impressive 19 points per game, Johnson is currently the SEC’s top scorer, and he’s reached double digits in 19 of his 20 games, including a career-high 30 points against No. 13 Texas A&M. He’s one of just three freshmen to make the Top 10 list, and his scoring prowess stands out against other top candidates, including V.J. Edgecombe and Kasparas Jakucionis.
Despite being in elite company, Johnson isn’t resting on his laurels. “I still have areas to grow,” he said after his standout performance against Texas A&M. “By the time we get towards the end of the SEC tournament, I have to improve if I want to have a chance to win.”
