SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR) — On a day celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports, Syracuse was on the verge of a major win, but Virginia’s relentless comeback shattered their hopes, as the Cavaliers stormed back to snatch a 70-67 victory.
Syracuse came out strong, taking a narrow 37-36 lead into halftime, and exploded in the third quarter with a stunning 10-point unanswered run. Sophie Burrows was on fire, dropping 15 points with seven minutes still left in the third. At one point, Syracuse stretched their lead to 12 points, and then Izabel Varejao extended it to a commanding 14-point advantage.
But Virginia wasn’t done. The Cavaliers cranked up the pressure and began chipping away at the lead, finishing the third quarter just six points behind. In the final frame, Virginia unleashed a devastating 19-8 run, outpacing Syracuse and securing the hard-fought 70-67 win.
Sophie Burrows had a career-defining game, scoring 22 points, her highest-ever in a single game. Meanwhile, Kyra Wood notched her sixth career double-double, posting 18 points and 15 rebounds.
